The Fortress

Walls that have been crafted like a castle in a fable Ready for war no matter how deadly Praised for for being brilliant The sweet girl who always kept the table She was never quite ready But craved to be independent Now here she is a top the weakened gable Crying out “why did no one help me” No one saw to what extent Her carefully crafted castle Her never dimming light Was crumbling inside Strong yet fragile She survived by the moonlight Losing to the darkness she is terrified Fighting to survive time became critical Her story she wished she could rewrite The book where she cried the tears have now dried In her head is where the world made sense Her deconstructed thoughts brought comfort Became the fortress she couldn’t escape The scales have lost their balance And experience became the culprit Losing the fight of getting her thoughts to silence Every memory added to the ticker tape Her light is losing is brilliance Never learning how to put herself first The fortress I created became a prison not a home Daylight begins to take shape With the rise of the morning sun She crawls down from the gable To find the seeds that she once sown Have sprouted one by one Drawn to the light the answer became simple One she had already known She knows what must be done So she runs to her crumbling fortis and undone table To repair the garden she’d once known Why is it I can stand up To the demon who haunts my dreams But never the people who don’t know what friendship means
