The twilight hour has fallen over Evergreen Cove, a small seaside village nestled among towering pine trees. Down the cobblestone path, warm golden light filters through the curtains of the cottages, beckoning weary travelers. Katee, a young woman with an adventurous spirit, finds herself drawing near to the welcoming glow after a long day's hike.
She adjusts the strap of her rucksack and takes in the sights around her. Neatly tended gardens line the path, bursting with late bloomers like lavender and asters in shades of deep purple. The air is thick with their calming fragrance and the briny scent of the sea just beyond the tree line. Up ahead, the village green comes into view - a circular patch of lush grass ringed by wide oak trees hung with twinkling lanterns.
At the far side, a weather-worn signpost points the way to the beach, but Katee feels drawn to the warmth and hospitality of the cottages first. She follows the path as it bends and winds between the homes. Baskets overflowing with vibrant petunias hang from lampposts, and soft light glows through the stained glass of the windows. The sound of her boots on the stone path is the only noise, aside from the occasional hoot of an owl taking refuge in the pines.
Katee spots a trellis ahead, completely engulfed in deep green vines and creamy white blooms. She pauses for a moment, reaching up to trail her fingers along the delicate petals. They're morning glories, she realizes with a smile, opening their faces towards the moonlight.
Up ahead is a cottage with that same creamy hue, its front porch bedecked in potted plants of every variety. The door is flung open, and the flickering light of a fireplace dances in the windows.
A plump orange tabby saunters across the porch, pausing to look up at Katee with curious green eyes. Smoke drifts lazily from the chimney, and the most heavenly aroma wafts from within - fresh baked bread, melting butter, and just a hint of cinnamon. Katee finds her stomach rumbling in response.
