Lyrics
Gather round children, sit, come near
For this tale I will tell is one of danger
A cautionary tale you will want to hear
Come, come closer I am no stranger
This happened when I was quite young like you
In a far off land where I used to live
On that side the grass was green and the sky was blue
I was a happy child, with not a care to give
In all this beauty of this place I hold dear
Where all my plans and hopes were working
When I did not know that I needed to fear
There was a secret there lurking
Innocent and sweet, nobody could tell
The evil of the creature when it came to town
Soon enough we were under its spell
That's when everything started to go down
I woke up one day with my eyes swollen red
My skin was scratched up and tender
I could hardly even get up out of bed
The reason for this I could not remember
I stumbled outside and to my great horror
The creature had shed its disguise
It hovered there ugly enough to break any mirror
It looked unlike other butterflies
It was a pure shiny gold
It was iridescence alight
From its wings grains of sand rolled
And glittered brightly in flight
The glitter sand butterfly!
Gasped the town in disgust
Up from them rose a cry
As their lungs breathed its dust
As we watched this horrid thing flap
Bits came off every which way
Into eyes and noses and every little gap
Until no one could tell the night from the day
As the glitter sand butterfly sparkled in the sun
My father bent his head toward me
He whispered to me to run
And so away I did flee
I left behind my family, my friends, my life
I ran for miles and miles
I wept with loss and with grief
As grains of glitter and sand trailed behind me in piles
I never came back to my old town again
I had to start over in a new place
That terror of the butterfly sat on me like a stain
But I never let it show on my face
Dear children of mine, be careful you see
This thing could find me at any time
Please stay young and wild and carefree
But remember please, this story of mine
