SHADOWS

Two thrashing sable birds eddied about my eaaves, So that they seemed to be black harbingers of ill, Who stirred in me unasked, most strange and errant thoughts, While I lived in that house and shared with them that air. And yet their shining wings reflected but myself, So that we three we learned to live in amity; And there I found my strength in their black feathered force, And yet I never sensed which moods of mine would start, Their harshly joyous cries as I stepped out each day.
