[a series of poems written 11.18.2023. They’re still how I feel today] [Fall Break] In August (a lifetime ago) Fall Break seemed like a mirage. A far off oasis. A relief from the stress of school. A time to spend with loved ones. Now? The one I love is miles away. This week is a deserted island. I count the days before I can return to my life. Until I am home again. [violin solo] [choir hymn] [Missing You] They say absence makes the heart grow fonder. Is that even possible at this point? I think of you constantly. I see signs of you everywhere. The rise and fall of the winter sun. The googly eyes stuck to a lamppost. In the smile from a stranger. Do they know how it feels to miss someone like this? I think that they do. We are all missing someone in this world. Today, I’m missing you. [instrumental interlude] [choir hymn] [That House] I could drive there with my eyes closed. I’m there in my mind now. The curve of the driveway. The perfectly obnoxious truck in the car port. The kitchen door left unlocked just for me. Coffee brewing in the kitchen. Lo-fi beats playing from the TV. Your smile stretching from ear to ear as you welcome me into you arms. That familiar scent of you. You make that house feel like home. [instrumental crescendo] [fade out] [end]
