Only Ashes Remain

A fire burned our house to the ground, The house that had once been a marriage. Red. Hot. Fire. All that remained were ashes, and slowly receding emotional pain. Pain. And white. Cold. Ashes. I came to understand, To realize that maybe, just maybe, there is such a thing as two people, Two people just being too different. To different for things to work out, As evidenced in hearts, Hearts going in different directions. Maybe it really was insurmountable. An insurmountable, irreconcilable distance between them. She gave him years to figure it out, But once she closed that door, It locked behind her. She never looked back. She never saw his heart break. Break and shatter into a million pieces. And all that remained were ashes. White. Cold. Ashes.
