Tribute

Hush'd be the camps today, And soldiers, lay down arms so worn and weary, Each heart and soul, in silent thought, To mourn our leader's passing, dearly. No more for him the battles rage, No more the taste of glory, nor of loss, Time's relentless storms, his soul no longer can engage, No more the endless clouds his path shall cross. But sing, oh poet, in our stead, Sing of the love we held for him so true, For you, who's lived among our tents, just you, Understand the bond we shared, the loyalty we knew. So as they lay his coffin down to rest, Sing, while the earth’s doors gently close, One verse for the hearts that knew him best, A melancholy tribute to all soldiers’ woes.
