Its surface experiences the greatest temperature variation in the solar system, ranging from -173°C to 427°C. Mercury’s surface is heavily cratered, resembling our Moon, and it has no natural satellites. One of its most prominent features is the Caloris Basin, a giant impact crater spanning 1,550 kilometers. The planet’s interior is largely iron, which generates a magnetic field about 1% as strong as Earth’s. Observing Mercury can be challenging due to its closeness to the Sun. However, missions like MESSENGER and BepiColombo have provided valuable insights into its geology, composition, and magnetic environment. Mercury’s thin exosphere is composed mainly of oxygen, sodium, and hydrogen, created by the solar wind striking its surface.
